Emma’s Bath and Beauty Products

Look what Emma made! Three amazing body scrubs, three different bath fizzies and three lip glosses."Can you believe we made these?" asked an incredulous 12 year old.

What a time we had! I saw the recipes for these goodies in Martha Stewart Living way back in December, and we’ve been meaning to make them ever since. Truth be told, it took all my professional experience and a few weeks to track down all the ingredients and the containers, but once that was done the project was a breeze…though Bruce strongly disagreed and said it was more work than any party we’ve ever given. Emma invited four friends to join us, and I think all the not-so-little girls enjoyed themselves immensely.  Unfortunately though, like many of Martha’s recipes I’ve tried over the years, these didn’t work as specified and we had to improvise quite a bit. The proportion of the Carrier Oil to Epson Salt in the Body Scrubs was totally off—you need much more salt; the Lip Balms went pretty true to form, but it would have been helpful if MS had specified the amount of lipstick shavings you need (almost one tube for each of two products); and the Bath Fizzies were quite tricky when it came time to dampen the mix just enough so it was packable but didn’t fizz up into giant boxes.  The bottom line pour moi: I don’t think I’ll ever buy another body scrub. It’s so easy to make, and I love that you can control the consistency and the scent.
