We Won the Honest Scrap Award!

What an honor! Phoo-D has passed the Honest-Scrap award to all of us at The Unconfidential Cook! I love her blog—it’s beautifully written, beautifully photographed and her food sensibilities are, well, do yourself a favor and check it out asap; a veteran blogger, she has been a great inspiration to newbie me. As a recipient of this award, I am required to list 10 Random Things about myself; my daughter Emma, who is wholly responsible for the Kids section of my little blog; Guthrie, our 160-pound Leonberger who is wholly responsible for all of Emma’s doggie treats (like Pupparoni Pizza) in the kids section; and  my husband Bruce, who’s wholly responsible for all blog photography (I am hopeless with a camera). Here goes…and thanks again,  Phoo-D!

10 Random Things (in random order)

1. We’ve been taking Emma to restaurants since she was a baby, and she was so well-mannered she was invited (without us) into the kitchen at Union Square Cafe in New York when she was three years old. (She had an order of their fantastic mashed potatoes for dinner.)

2.Years later, and thanks to eating lunch during a 20-minute period at school, I doubt that invite would come her way again—if she could, she’d eat soup with her hands.

Emma was a lemon this past halloween....

Emma was a lemon this past halloween....Guthrie is never far behind her.

3. I was adamantly opposed to getting a dog. Nonetheless, Bruce gave the breeder a deposit without my knowledge, then showed Emma pictures of the puppies when they were born. I was doomed….Now I LOVE Guthrie, but still don’t want a dog (if you know what I mean).

Emma and Guthrie last summer in Mammoth, CA. We did a lot of hiking, and they swam together in almost every lake we happened upon.

4. Bruce and I met in 8th grade; we were in the same class of 40 through high school and we were not particularly friendly.  We re-met decades later when a classmate revealed she’d just talked to Bruce, and out of the blue he said he’d like to give me a kiss on the lips. Who knew?

5. One of the best things I’ve ever done is heli-ski in British Columbia. I’ve been ten times.

6. Last week I went to the Indian Wells Tennis Tournament and watched the Nadal match until 2:10 am.

7. It wasn’t long after I got my  job as Editor in Chief of Elle that I realized getting there was more interesting than being there.

8. My parents went on vacation when I was six and my sister was three, and as a treat our Uncle Ed took us to Quo Vadis, an elegant French restaurant in New York. We ordered escargot.

9. Not a day goes by that I don’t miss New York.

10. Not a day goes by that I am not amazed by the resilience, brilliance and sweetness of our Emma. Since I’m her mother this probably doesn’t count for much, so….

11. Some Favorites:

  • Movie: Dare I say it? “Pretty Woman” (but even I can’t watch it again…)
  • Books: The Great Gatsby (F. Scott Fitgerald for his poetry) and Going After Cacciato (Tim O’Brien for his mastery of form/language)
  • TV Shows: “Damages,” “24,”  “Mad Men”…and, yes, “Little People, Big World” (because I just love Matt and Amy)
  • Beverages of Choice: Margaritas and  Champagne
  • Confection: Teuscher Champagne Truffles
  • Ice Cream: Bertillon in Paris (chocolate, pistachio and mango) and Dr. Bob’s Chocolate Chocolate Chip
  • Colors: Black for dress, white for walls
  • Place to Eat: Bed–knees up, plate wedged between thighs and chest
  • Hero: Greg Mortenson (Three Cups of Tea)—all appendages crossed that he wins the Nobel

Least Favorite Thing: walking the dog/picking up his poop
In the spirit of sharing this award, I’d like to honor Jim of JoePastry, who was the first to put my blog on his list of favorites and who knows just about everything there is to know about baking.

  1. Wow an award already! Aren’t you doing well!
What a great idea too, I guess it’s a way of relating more with people when you learn more about them.
I loved your comment about the dog and I also can relate to being “hopeless with a camera”. In my case I have a photographic genius daughter who is “trying” to teach me.
Anyhow Congrats and thanks for sharing.

  2. congrats! omg, that dog is so adorable. what a big pillow! how cute you’ve known your husband since you were a kid. – amy

  3. Bravo! Great job – I love the photos and random things. Thanks for sharing them! (We love exploring around Mammoth too.)

  4. Thoroughly enjoyed your random things (Tim O’Brien, “Not a day goes by when I don’t miss New York.”) What I still miss, two decades later – is leaving my apt. and knowing the whole world was outside. Love the lemon costume! Must make a lemon dinner tonight.

  5. Love your random things! That picture of Emma and Guthrie by the lake with the mountains in the background is breathtaking. Heli- Skiing- Wow!

  6. OMG Emma is such a cute and sweet girl, I am sure that is the reason why Guhtrie is so close to her.

  7. I loved reading these tidbits about you!! how fun!!
Are you originally from NYC? I am originally from Yonkers, I miss it so too, especially the closeness to the city and ArthurAve.. Cutedoggie and your daughter Im sure is indeed a treasure!!

    • Yes, originally from NYC. Oh, how I miss it. Just walking one block from my apartment to the Food Emporium was more interesting than being out all day in LA. Thanks so much for stopping by–love your blog!

  8. I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don’t know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

  9. WOW – have I ever been absent for 6 months and definitely missed your postings and recipes. I’m thrilled that you received this prestigous award and while I thought Bill and I knew you and Bruce very well I’ve still learned more about you. How nice of you to recognise Jim of Joepastry and how nice for me to be the source of the relationship. You both have commendable blogs and love reading your prose as well as your recipes.
    Scrumptiously, sue
