Five-Minute Chocolate Mug Cake (RR*)

Perfect for a playdate, or any time you want your kid off the computer! Emma and her friends improvise by adding mini marshmallows, swirls of peanut butter (or peanut-butter flavored morsels), frosting, whipped cream, all sorts of sprinkles, nuts, raisins, anything their little Top Chefs’ hearts desire.  My friend Sue sent this recipe “in exchange” for the Bread-Tomato “Cake.”

4 T flour
4 T sugar
2 T cocoa
1 egg
3 T milk
3 T oil
3 T chocolate chips (optional but Emma always uses!)
Small splash of vanilla extract
1 large coffee mug

Mix dry ingredients together in the mug. Add the egg, and mix. Pour in the milk and oil, and mix well. Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again. Microwave for three minutes on high. Depending on the size of the mug, the cake may rise over the top–that’s okay. Allow to cool a little (we think it’s best warm), tip out onto a plate (or not–we don’t), frost (or not).

  1. Hi Catherine! The girls & I have made these cakes before. (I found the recipe on the Haydee Chocolatier website.) Very simple & yummy, and they suggest chopped up truffles instead of chocolate chips as an alternative.

  3. Catherine, thanks for the tip on this recipe. I have seen it around but with your recommendation I am sure it is good! I could probably pre-mix the dry ingredients to have on hand for emergencies- needing chocolate cake is always an emergency.
